Hello,

I've been asked to teach a six week drumming program for children at a local indoor play space, and could use some fresh ideas.

The program is broken into three different classes for the following age levels:

- 6 mo to 2 yrs old (w/ parent participation) - 35 minutes
- 3 to 5 yrs old (w/parent participation) - 45 minutes
- "big kids', ages 6 to 11 yrs old (parents drop off) - 1 hour

The equipment I'll be using for these classes are three gathering drums, several hand drums and various types of shakers, scrapers and rhythm sticks. I also have other different drums that I'd like to introduce and share with the kids, such as native american drums, Indian Tablas, Peruvian Cajons, and a traditional trap set that I'll probably set up on the final day to share with the bigger kids.

If anyone here has taught drumming specifically to groups of kids, what activities did you find were most fun?
Can you recommend any websites or resources related to drumming and children - for me as a teacher... as well as for parents?

I envision this being something like a community drum circle class, but would like to plan some sort of outline in advance to present to parents as well as a structure for me to follow in planning my lessons. Of course, drum circles are free form in nature but it helps to plan in advance cohesive, focused activities to keep children on task. Plus, I find that parents of small children - esp at-home parents - are hungry for information. They really appreciate any extra tips and resources an educator can give them at these sorts of "mommy and me' classes, that they can use beyond the classroom. What I hope to inspire is a love for music making and expression, as well as a positive stress release for my students. Drumming is so beneficial, and I know a class like this will be a great experience!

My background: I'm a Licensed Kindermusik educator with a long, prior career in the alternative/avant scene... I play various instruments, but always connected mostly to drums. Kindermusik is a whole child approach to music and movement education. For the last four years I've taught weekly classes to babies, toddlers, preschoolers and young children, as well as "other abled' children with autism, down syndrome, apraxia etc at a local music school for children. I also facilitate an intergenerational music class for little ones and elders at an assisted living facility.

Any advice for developing a new drumming program for kids would be put to positive use, and most appreciated..
Thank you!

PS: I will be cross posting this in some of my other tribes...

Welcome
The first ever Dunun Village gathering in the North Lake Tahoe Area at the lovely Clair Tappaan Lodge will happen Sat Sept 26th and Sun 27th, 2009.
The gathering is intended for those interested in the music and dance of West Africa and to grow together as a community; musically, spiritually, and playfully!

General Info:
Clair Tappaan Lodge is a rustic lodge located near the famous Sugar Bowl Ski Resort in the North Lake Tahoe area. See: Ctl.sierraclub.org for more details.
-Rooms in the lodge are available for $46 taxes included/night/per person. Please contact Clair Tappaan Lodge to reserve your spot for this event.
-Kids 4-13 yrs old are $20/night taxes included.
-Infants/toddlers 3yrs old or less are free
Day Passes: $20/adult includes a lunch ticket
-4-13 yr olds are $5 w/lunch
-3 yr or less are free
Classes are informal, and anyone is welcome to teach or participate.
**For those staying at the Lodge three meals a day will be offered w/a vegetarian option.

Here are some ground rules:

-No private fires.
-Park your car in parking area when not unloading.
-Dogs are allowed on grounds not in building. Owners are responsible for dogs. Please no problem dogs.
-No Strong Alcohol

What to Bring
Camping gear (unless paying for a bed in the lodge), bowl and spoon, snacks, flashlight, drums, toys (juggling clubs, hoops, or whatever else you fancy).
Clothes for all weather. It will likely be quite hot during the day, but can cool off at night. September in the High Sierras tends to have warm, clear days with colder evenings so bring some shorts and also warm weather clothes.

Workshops
Both morning and afternoon there will be drum and dance workshops in the back yard and in the building- probably after dinner, too! Drum classes can also be arranged at all times in different clearings and rooms. Classes often happen spontaneously, so don’t be shy to ask if you want to learn. Workshops will be posted at the information center within the lodge.

Volunteers
This is your gathering. If staying in the lodge please contribute your energy by volunteering for at least one shift of: kitchen help, clean-up. Please come early or stay late to help set up/clean up if you can!
We’ll have a sign-up sheet posted at the information station to help organize volunteer efforts.

Dinner Circle
There will be a dinner circle every evening. This is our moment to gather as a community and communicate about our needs and offer our blessings, so please come.

Getting There

I really like the sound of the drum and its light weight. But I don't know how to hold it. I want to be able to sit and play but because it is so long, my hands are too high in the air. I have tried angling the bottom away from me. This puts the drum face facing me but I am afraid that the angle of my hands and arms will cause problems in my wrist.

I also noticed someone said that it is not good for drum circles which is what I want to participate in.

Any advise? Should I return this and get a more traditional Djembe?

I was looking to check out a drum circle in the Chicago area, but every link I find online seems to be out of date! So, my question is.....anyone know of a recurring drum circle in the Chicago area that a newbie can check out (if not to jam then at least to groove to)???

I always LOVED the drum circles that would spring up at Dead shows back in the day. Now I've got a tongue drum that I've been working on.....and I'm looking to use it.

I hope you are doing well!

I am a casting producer for ABC Television's hit reality show, Wife Swap. I am currently trying to cast a family that loves to participate in Drum Circles for a special episode of our show and thought perhaps you might know someone that would be interested in such an opportunity.

In case you are unfamiliar with the show, the premise of Wife Swap is to take two different families and have the Mom's switch place to experience how another family lives. Half of the week, Mom lives the life of the family she is staying with. Then she introduces a "rule change" where she implements rules and activities that her family has. It's a positive experience for people to not only learn but teach about other families and other ways of life.

Wife Swap airs on Disney owned ABC television on Fridays at 8 pm- the family hour! There is another show that copies ours. We focus on having fun, learning and teaching. They focus on conflict. I just want to make sure our show doesn't get confused with theirs!

Requirements: Each family must consist of two parents and at least one child between 7 and 17 and should reside in the continental U.S. (There may be other children living in the home who are older or younger than the required age…as long as one child is in the required age range.)

This is a very unique experience that can be life changing for everyone. In addition, each family that tapes an episode of Wife Swap receives a $20,000 honorarium for their time. Anyone who refers a family that appears on our program receives $1000 as a 'thank you" from us. Please feel free to forward this email on to anyone that you feel might be interested.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this. If you have any questions, please email me at the address below. Thank you for your time!
I have traditional hawaiin shell leis (necklaces) for trade. These necklaces are made out of one of the rarest shells in the world. Kahelelanis. Kahelelani means "The pathway to heaven" . Back in the day these necklaces were made for only the king and queen of hawaii, when they passed from this life to the next. hence "The pathway to heaven" Today they are still made by the local kauain and niihaun families. I was blessed enough to learn how to make them in kauai. They are the only shell in the world considered a gem.
There are anywhere from 5 to 3000 shells on each necklace depending on the style. The prices ranges are from 100 to 1000 dollars for the ones that i make. You can check them out on my tribe photos. I am willing to trade a double strand rope for a nice djembe.
Thank you

Happy Earth Week Family!

I hope everyone is taking the time to be a local activist for the earth.

Questions of the day:

What is Front Gate?
What is Welcome Home?
(Answers are below)

As a follow up to Rainbow Magic & Patch Adams video, a long, long, long time gatherer
(going back to the first Rainbow Gathering in 1972 and before) sent me this story
from days gone past.

*********************Begin Patch Adams Story**********************

Patch Adams talking in council at the Rainbow Gathering in Arizona, July 1979

I listened to Patch's rap in the council. It was all about hygiene and how simple things like handwashing and better dishwashing could help keep us healthier. He explained the fly-feces-food connection and how we had to break that string of connections in order to keep from getting the runs.

When he finished people cheered and clapped and he stepped outside the circle. I went up to him. "Patch, that was terrific. That was exactly the kind of thing this council needs to hear," I told him.

"No, you're wrong," He told me. "They didn't get it. They understood it. But I wasn't clear enough to get this circle to tell everyone else so the message really makes a difference."

"No, Patch, you did great," I said trying to be encouraging.

"Uh-uh." He shook his head smiling. "You come back tomorrow. I'm going make myself more clear."

The next day Patch returned to the council with a troupe of mimes. They were all dressed up in outlandish costumes. When Patch's turn in council came, first two people mimed using a latrine at the edge of the circle and there appeared two giant 'turds' - really people in gunny sack outfits - lying on the ground. Then two big ol' flies came a buzzin' round and round the circle. The crowd was in stitches. The flies landed on the poop. Munch, munch, munch!

Meanwhile the two people come returning from the dinner circle carrying a gigantic bowl. Oh, they're tired! Let's skip getting this dirty bowl washed...we'll just leave it outside the tent. So they lie down to sleep, zip the imaginary tent door and here come the flies! Buzzing onto the food crud dried on the edge of the bowl.

Patch is explaining how this why so many of us in camp have diarrhea. And how dishwashing can save the day. Everybody told everybody. In fact we're still telling everybody. Real teaching. Patch in his element, healing people by making them laugh.

************************END PATCH ADAMS STORY***********************

@@@@@@ GREAT NEWS FAMILY!

We have focalizers for creating a positive, loving Front Gate and Welcome Home!
However, they can't do it alone. So if you've been having an itch to make sure
folks coming home get greeted in a kind, loving fashion with a cup of coffee
or a pot of soup, please plan on helping out (volunteering) in these areas. If you want to be
involved in the pre-gathering planning for Front Gate and Welcome Home, send
me (kzirk at earthlink dot net) your contact info and I'll pass it on to the people I know involved in these efforts.

@@@@@@@@@@ SCOUTING HELP NEEDED

We need folks to go scouting (no experience necessary, just a willingness to learn).
We need folks to contribute some green energy to buy gas for people who are going scouting.

If you want to plug into the scouting effort, call Jimbo 1-406-222-5662 or
##### Join the movement for an amazing gathering in Wyoming

Don't forget, we're circling for Wyoming and building energy in San Diego every Sunday @ 1pm.
If you want to plug in, please join us. http://home.earthlink.net/~scrollinfo/BacktoBasics.pdf

As always, please copy and distribute this information freely.
Visit http://www.welcomehome.org or http://home.earthlink.net/~scrollinfo for more information.

######FRONT GATE ANSWER###############
Front Gate is on the road and you hit it driving into the gathering. The Front Gate Crew directs traffic on the road and gets you set up with a safe and legal parking spot (so you don't
get towed). The parking lot crew greets the world with hugs and info. They maintain an organized and secure parking area, and make an around the clock commitment that involves: greeting new arrivals, giving out information, traffic control, security, minor auto repair, maintaining a kitchen and fire circle, & an active Shanti Sena.

######WELCOME HOME ANSWER##############
Welcome Home is set up past the front gate, just before the main camping areas to meet & greet people as they enter the site on foot. It provides a place for people to rest from their journey, be informed about site specifics conditions, and receive copies of "Rap 107" and " Rap 701". A site map is posted.
beginning July 1, 1972, near Aspen, Colorado -
that we people can effectively proceed to evolve, expand, &
live in harmony & peace.

WHERE WILL THE GATHERING BE?

The truth is no one knows where the gathering will be at this time.

In July 2007, Vision Council called for it to be in
Wyoming

Thanksgiving Council

In November 2007, Thanksgiving Council (T-Council) took place
over the four day holiday weekend to discuss planning
for a healthy and safe gathering and they came up with the
following dates for the next councils:

For T-Council notes, visit http://home.earthlink.net/~scrollinfo/TCouncil2007One.html

Specific dates for future councils where set as

May 1st - Mobile Scout Fire (First scout council)

All the scouts and anyone interested in being involved
in site selection show up. No experience necessary, but
you must be able to pay your own way, contribute to food,
gas, etc.

June 2nd - Second Scout Rendezvous

All people who have been scouting will come together
to discuss what they found and possibly revisit sites
that hold great promise.

Spring council
Starts June 10

Spring Council is when people get together and share
the info on the possible sites available for the gathering, discuss the prons and cons of each location and then reach a decision. It generally takes one to seven days. If you come to Spring Council,
please be self sufficient and and prepared to feed and water yourself.

As soon as the site is selected, information is widely
distributed. All the information I have is located
at http://home.earthlink.net/~scrollinfo/wyoming.html
I also email updates to folks on my email list.

Until spring council reseaches a decision, there is no
answer to the question "where is the gathering?"

Once Spring Council reaches a decision, Seed Camp begins.
Seed Camps is when we create the infrastructure to support the
gathering. This means building kitchens, digging shitters,
laying water pipe and building water filtration stations.
Seed camp generally finishes by the end of June.
If you come to seed camp early be self sufficient and be prepared to work.

The Annual Gathering of The Tribes

The main day of the gathering is July 4. Some people come
a few weeks early to create the gathering. Some stay a few
weeks late to help with clean up. Plan on spending at least
a week so you have a chance to get settled in, make friends
and get involved.

Gatherings tend to be located many miles from the nearest Interstate
and paved road. When planning your drive, realize that the
last 50 to 100 miles may be traveled at 20 MPH and plan
accordingly.

Always plan to arrive early in the morning. The roads
into the gathering are generally in poor shape and it's
easy to get lost at 1 AM in the dark when you've been
driving for 12 hours. Kick it at a camp site for the
night, get up at dawn and come on home.

It can take 4 to 8 hours from the time you park
your car until you've gotten to your campsite and pitched
your tent. If this is your first gathering, I'd plan
on 8 so you can figure out what's happening and where
you want to camp.

KIDS:

For people with kids, if you've never been to a gathering
plug in with Kiddie Village - a kid friendly space with
lots of parents willing to share how to sanely and safely
parent at a gathering. If you've never camped with kids
before, read up an that to make sure you're prepared.
Read the rap on kids at Gatherings http://rainbowguide.info/Raps/RAPeng.php?id=13

ACCESS:
For people with special needs, ask for Handicamp - a space
for people with mobility and other related disabilities with lots
of folks willing to help you make the most of your gathering
experience. While the trails can be tough and conditions vary from
site to site, there's usually
a couple of friendly folks just waiting to assist with the
rough spots. Sometimes we have cool things like rickshaws
to assist people in getting around.
Bring your own personal supplies (catheter, wraps, chair,
medical supplies, diapers, cleanup, etc.).
Bring own attendent if you need assistance with personal care
(bowel programs, skin, transfer, catheterizations, wounds, etc) or
supervision issues or other issues (mobility, access, safety) as needed.

FOR EVERYONE:

I recommend that you read the Mini Manual of
Gathering Consciousness to prepare for a positive gathering.
You can find a copy on online
at http://rainbowguide.info/PDFs/Mini-Manual2004.pdf
If you can't read PDF files, email me and I'll send
you an ASCII text copy.
There's other great raps at http://rainbowguide.info as well.

The drum circle has to meet every week on the same day without missing a week. My first thought was Hippie Hill in SF, but I'm not sure if it has ever missed a week.

It seems like I remember one in Santa Cruz too. To much of everything to remember that far back though.

There's one in Norfolk that has 9yrs +.

So I received this email last night from a Black's Beach regular.
As a point of reference, the actual night of the full moon was Friday.

Since we canceled the Full Moon Circle, people seem to be going anyway and while
many Rainbows go on the night of the full moon to try to teach people how to
be conscious with the land and each other, the nights surround the full moon
seem to be an issue as well.

I went to Black's Saturday evening shortly before sunset and did some minor
trash pickup (cigarette butts and small scraps of plastic in the sand) as
well as removed some left over clothes, shoes, towels, etc. I didn't leave
until dark and there was no one there when I left - but I'm guessing later ....

At any rate, I am very sadden by all this. I've left the brother's name off
the email because who he is isn't important - what is important is the information
and pain he is sharing.

***********BEGIN FORWARDED EMAIL********************

I'm always thankful for your efforts. We all mean well, but you have fallen short this last gathering. As I arrived the morning of March 22, there were still many people hiking up the trail. I saw one man rightly challenged for failing to keep his promise of carrying up cans. I'm sure he never kept that promise.

As I hiked down, I was saddened to find that steps had been taken from the trail. Just as we were getting ahead on trail upgrades, we suffered a setback. Soon afterward I discovered that volleyball poles had also been cut off. Soon after that I found the poles had not gone up in smoke. It was a senseless crime against us.

Eventually I learned that the vandalism of the trail had not taken place Friday night, but rather Thursday. Then Sunday I learned that a further act of vandalism had taken place Saturday night. More of the trail had been raided for firewood.

These acts of vandalism are taking place before, during and after your gathering. Abusive and irresponsible people are arriving before you, and staying after you have gone. I don't know what you can do about this. I just want you to be aware of the depth of the problem.

I feel a personal pain because I have done much of the trail upgrades. This vandal not only undoes my work. He leaves it in a dangerous state, specifically spikes sticking up. I hesitate to continue with our upgrades, because we may just be supplying him with more firewood.

If you want to be part of the solution, visit http://home.earthlink.net/~scrollinfo and get in contact via email or phone.

There will be a "facilitated" circle at the Studio for Healing Arts on March 30th at 3:30. The cost is $7 to get in and $5 to rent a drum. It's in Ghent somewhere. They're online.

I hope to make it. Out of the 20 yrs I've been playing in circles, I've never been to a facilitated circle before. I've never heard of renting a drum at a circle before either. I wonder if this is a Arthur Hull deal.
You might see this letter cross-posted all over the place. I wish to reach the widest community possible and your understanding is appreciated. Should you know someone who might benefit from this information, please pass it along.

I apologize that it has been a while since I last wrote. This past BIRDS festival was a smashing success. Thanks to everyone who participated in making it a most memorable event.

There are some fantastic pictures posted on-line for all to see. These pictures are from the two evening concerts and have been provided by Eric Willison, President of the Mill Valley Cultural Arts Umbrella (www.millvalleyarts.org); click on the BIRDS link under the Latest News banner. We will be posting many of these on the BIRDS’ site shortly. If anyone took pictures during the Saturday street fair, we are looking for new photos for the website. You will receive proper photo credit and a link to your web page, should you have one and wish a link.

On to other matters, John Millen has informed me that he wishes to step down as president of the board, after many years of dedicated service to the festival. I congratulate John on his extensive commitment and dedication to the community. He has expressed his desire to continue serving on the board in a sort of emeritus capacity. Institutional memory is vital to the success of any organization.

So where does this leave BIRDS? Well, to put on a festival that can reach a maximum potential public requires people who can work together to create the event. We need people who have fundraising & grant writing experience. Additionally, we need people who have skills in promotion & marketing…audio, photo & video production… programming & logistics... community education, etc. We are looking for imagination, innovation and creative problem solving.

This is a tall task!!! However, it cannot be done successfully by just a few people. This is especially true when taking into account that everyone has a life outside BIRDS: i.e. work, school, family and other obligations. BIRDS is a community-based organization that needs a strong community behind it.

Now, to next topic: the BIRDS’ Board. I am announcing that there are six to ten openings for new board members. We are looking for people who want to be community builders and who wish to influence the future direction of the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival. The board needs people who can do all those items I addressed above, plus bookkeeping and general office assistance.

There are no limits to the possibilities that can be accomplished if we work together. That said, it is important for everyone to realize that for BIRDS to move forward we need people to step up and take on these various tasks.

The beauty of this is that no one will be asked to do anything outside their expertise. If we can get enough folks to become involved, then no one will have to work too hard and much more will get accomplished. It is truly up to the community to decide the direction of the organization. It should never reflect just one point of view, but many.

Well, there you have it. I am challenging everyone to get involved. It’s now up to all of us to make this wonderful organization achieve its fullest potential.

Aleichem Shalom…

So I stopped doing drum circles a few years ago, but miss the general vibe. So now I'm organizing some small get-togethers to test the waters. I recently got a small group together to play for an hour at the Green Expo, and it went well. Really well, actually. I'm hoping it'll continue to work out, but...

Here's the problem...I'll illustrate with a specific example of what happened at one gathering (though similar things have happened before), and I'd appreciate if you guys cold tell me honestly if my actions were inappropriate. I meet up with a bunch of folks and everyone drags their gear out. We set up and just leap right in (there is no leader, just spontaneous music). I get excited because the first groove up is just SOOO happening. Straight 4 thing a bit quicker than heartbeat's pace. One guy lays in some cool syncopations that open up an opportunity, so I step in with these dotted quarters against the pulse (implies a 3 against 4). So far so good.

Then I decide it would be cool to drag it across the bar line. This is where it starts to go bad. A couple of guys look at me funny and start to lose the beat. One stops, so I say (roll with it, bro - just stay on the pulse & you'll be OK", so he does and it works out...but he doesn't look happy. My buddy smiles real big, though, because he really digs it, and so he starts playing a progressive accent across 4 bars (accenting 1 on one, 2 on bar 2, 3 on bar 3, 4 on bar 4 - rinse, repeat). We get the funny looks again, and a few stumble, so I pound the quarter to help them stay on. He sees what's happening and eases back. The rest of this groove goes well.

The next groove comes up and it's also a kicker, so we're grooving along a few minutes and I start putting this 3/4 groove against the 4/4. Again, it's easy to stay on so long as you keep the quarter. I get the harsh look again and so am about to go back to the 4, but my buddy hears this and so he drops in a 7/8 thing against the groove. To my ears, things are REALLY happening now, and I'm really pounding the down so nobody gets lost...but then 2 guys just stop playing completely and one yells "Will you guys PLEASE just STOP!".

So we both drop back to the 4 and everything goes smoothly, if a bit boringly, again.

Now, I understand that some of these little oddities can throw a person if they aren't used to hearing them, but not if you keep track of the down beat, which is why I told them to stay on the down and they'd be OK. Is it them being silly, or is it simply inappropriate for me to engage in that sort of rhythmic play in a drum circle?

I'm not asking to argue - I really wanna know, so feel free to tell me straight if I was being an ass.

Thanx in advance!

Directions: Stonehenge is at the Southwest end of the UCSD campus adjacent (just north) of the Theater District.

If you're coming by car, from Interstate 5 exit La Jolla Village Drive and go west. Get in the far right lane as soon as you are west of the Interstate. Exit onto Gilman Drive North (the far right lane will veer off onto Gilman Drive. Turn left on Scholars Drive South (the first left). Continue past the Che Cafe. Stonehenge is just past the Che on the right hand side of the road. For parking, continue past Stonehenge and turn right into parking lot P103 (the first lot on the right). No parking permit is required on weekends.

If you're coming by bus: take the North County Bus 101 or San Diego Transit buses 30 or 41 and get off at La Jolla Village Drive at Revelle College/Theatre District. Walk north past the theaters. We'll be south of Revelle Plaza.
Where is your mountain? What is your river? How did you come here? These are the questions at the heart of A Walk by the Sea (Dancetera label) the long-awaited fourth CD by Mahealani Uchiyama. The Bay Area artist is known for her ethereal and lyrical performances which meld music and dance. Mahealani is an artist of African and Native American ancestry, and her new CD is a collection which speaks of Mahealani's search for the spiritual and cultural traditions of her ancestors.

A Walk by the Sea is a ceremony of thanksgiving, a celebration of community, and of finding home. The collection contains a message of healing and peace which transcends the obstacle of language difference.

Mahealani is a dancer, musician, composer, and kumuhula (instructor of hula and ori). She has performed in such venues as San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts, Te Papa Tongarewa (the National Museum of New Zealand, Aotearoa), and the Grand Heiva in Tahiti, French Polynesia. She has won numerous awards for excellence in traditional Hawaiian and Tahitian dance and music.

She writes, “Is the place where we were born the place were we belong? Is home a physical location, or is it the summation of our experiences? Is who we are what we look like, or is it what is inside of us? The search is the same for all of us. The experiences and the results vary from person to person.

Special guests include Hugh Humphrey, one of the Caribbean's most dynamic percussionists, Ashley Moore, a composer, performer, producer and recording engineer whose award-winning work can be heard on radio, television, theater and film, and Aaron Sencil a drummer, choreographer, costume designer, song writer, and artistic director for the award-winning dance company Hui Tama Nui.

In A Walk by the Sea, Mahealani sings in several languages and calls upon all of us to overlook the superficial differences which divide us, and instead, to celebrate our common humanity.

It is available on CD Baby, eBay, and mahea.com. It will soon appear on iTunes and Amazon.com

An all around good drum. Any recomendations? Oh, I have to be able to buy it online too. No local resources here. Thanks so much! Hugs, Amazon

Five Days with no agenda other than to Drum, Swim and Play, sharing with each other and our Masters of the Drum for Teaching and Performance.

If you've been wondering about what we'll be doing at Fires Rising at Four Quarters Farm in a few weeks, take a look at this, and then pass the word! The video is from a documentary produced by Vision TV about Jeff's magic profession and his work with alchemical fire circle with Abbi. You'll see many familiar faces here.... We hope you will enjoy and want to put out huge thanks to the Four Quarters office guy Micheal for putting this together!

www.youtube.com/watch

Please, tell your friends about it! If any of you have a YouTube account, we'd appreciate you linking/favoriting it.

Once you've seen the video, you can go to www.4qf.org/_FiresRising/index.htm
and register online for an incredible and magickal gathering!

We hope to see you there!

Yours in Fire,
Spinner & Jeff McBride

When I place my mylar head on my doumbek I get one of two results, either the metal ring that forms the top of the drum is too high, or too low. When it is too high, my fingers bang against the sharp edge of the ring. When it is too low, the metal edge from the drum body sits higher than the metal ring, and my fingers hit that. If I adjust so that everything fits just right for the fingers, the drum is not properly tuned. It's like there should be shims or something to make sure it all aligns. Am I missing something?

Drumming to me is like screwing, I hate to be interrupted for any reason once the riff is hot and kicking.

I've facilitated circles before and the only time I put my two cents into the riff to change course is when the circle isn't listening to itself. And that can be done with a bell or a high sharp clave to get everyone back on the one.

Please feel free to email me at AmberBarbara@hotmail.com or here in Tribe Austin/AmberBarbara for more information.
This is an opportunity for the community to contribute ideas and comments about the festival. Also, we are looking for folks to get involved with the planning of this year's festival. It takes a community to put on a community festival, so encourage anyone and everyone who lives in the Baltimore/DC area to please attend this special meeting.

If anyone has any questions, please email me privately at drumfest@yahoo.com.

Thanks...Daveed

It will involve people of all ages and “walks of life” but educating youth to the causes, early detection and affects of cancer is one of our primary missions and we know this event will enlighten a lot of young people and spark involvement.

The Guinnesss World Record organization has been informed that drumSTRONG drummers (and others) will keep continuous rhythm in motion for at least 24 hours starting on May 5, 2007 just outside of Charlotte, NC.

Along with local high school and college drum corps, a horde of professional artists have been invited to participate. Full stage and backline support will be on site and all present will play along with center stage activities.

health fair
There will be an area at the event with tents and tables where various health (and other) organizations will have a venue to convey their missions and methods to a large group of people. Few people are not "touched" by cancer in some fashion...

DrumsForCures is also organizing a national network of percussionists to bring rhythm into children's hospitals and clinics for the unifying, healing and entertainment values. We know that it works on many levels.
If nothing else, I’d love for you (family and friends) to come play – drum, sing, dance, enjoy…

Our newly formed project is in dire need of people that can lay down a serious groove in the rhythm section, as well as being able to create texture and interact with other performers. We are going to be the musical foundation of a performance troupe, so you can think of us as a kind of sideshow chamber orchestra or circus band. We are pulling from a wide variety of musical styles including, but not limited to, New Orleans brass bands, klezmer, Dixieland, afrobeat, modern jazz (think mingus), ragtime, 19th century marches and old world folk music.

You should be a competent musician with enthusiasm for this project. We are looking for folks that meet any/all of the following descriptions: set drummers who can be extremely versatile, percussionists with experience playing ethnic/world music, people with experience in drum corps/marching/street bands. We are a large band and this is very much a labor of love, so this is not the band for you if you are just a hired gun or looking for a steady paying gig.
ABOUT ISSAM HOUSHAN
The union of music and movement is the essence of dance. The union of a musician and a dancer to create a seamless artistic expression is the ultimate manifestation of such a union. Issam Houshan does exactly that. Call him the “Wassan Pharaoun,” “King of the Drum,” or “Mr. Magic Fingers” and you only tell the half of it. His connection to the dancer is the essence of his magic, a merging of egos serving a mutual and identical goal. Issam is now recognized as the ultimate master of this art. An international music star, his past credits include touring with Sting in 2000, performing at the Grammys on the hit single Desert Rose, as well as performing and recording with countless Arab stars. In addition, he has toured with the Mile Copeland-produced Bellydance Superstars, the world’s premiere professional touring bellydancer performance group since 2003, with whom he has appeared in over 1000 shows in 16 countries over the past three years.
A highly accomplished percussionist on assorted Arab hand drums, Issam was formally trained at the Damascus Academy of Music and is the only remaining disciple of the legendary Arab drum master Mahmood Salahadeen. An accomplished and sought-after music instructor, he taught at the Damascus Music Institute for nine years and continues to teach workshops and private lessons around the world. Unequaled in his field, Issam is known by fellow Syrian musicians as the Wassan Pharaoun (Pharaoh of Rhythm) and his al assaben al Sahriha (magic fingers) are currently insured for 10 million dollars (1 million each).
His drum solos with the Bellydance Superstars are major features of each show, as captured in the films American Bellydancer, Solos from Monte Carlo, Bellydance Superstars, 30 Days to Vegas, Behind the Shimmy, and the instructional DVD The Art of the Drum Solo. His CD releases include his own Wassan Pharaoun, The Dancing Drum and Tabel Ya Issam, as well as percussion on the Galactic Caravan albums.
