i was thinking about just going to one of the local east bay suberban parks with all the yuppys walking ther dogs and druming, see what hapens.
i don't have a drum yet thow, once i have the time i'll start checking trift stores and garage sales and the like, but that seems like the sort of thing that will get snatched up prety quick and that peaple wouldn't trow away very often.

Re: one man drum circle.
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 4:44 AMI've drummed by myself several times, in parks and such. You can meet some interesting people that way! And if you're lucky, someone else with a drum or flute will come by and you'll have your own Drum Circle before long. If you do it, keep us informed of the experiences you have! :) -

Re: one man drum circle.
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 7:24 PMa bit hard to start up a circle with no drum. If you want it to be something that lasts, then consider getting a core group of drummers to do it a regulars specific time. Maybe take some group classes and then have the other students come out and play. You could also bring another drum and some various other perc. stuff in case someone rolls by. Good luck.

Re: one man drum circle.
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 11:09 AMdrums come in many shapes and sizes.. for example, a quick trip to home depot to pick up one of those white 5 gallon buckets could give you something to bang on.. I started drumming on mixing bowls.. :)

Re: one man drum circle.
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 7:21 AMI have seen buckets played in drum circles several times. They were played with drumsticks rather than hands, so the edges were not an issue. The drummers using them were not drowning-out the other drums, either, but gently just playing-along about the same volume as everyone else. It was great!
Speaking of drumming on buckets with drumsticks, check out this awesome video (I hope the link posts without a problem):

Re: one man drum circle.
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 12:16 PMas the other poster said, some sticks are good.. or, some gardening gloves from the same place.. on the other hand (no pun intended) I play alot of different things with my hands, and suffer no injuries... and I'm sure we know plenty of people who continue to hurt thier hands with real drums, due to poor technique..
anyway, no, this isn't a long term solution, but what I consider a create solution to get you moving your body and making sound..because, unlike the other poster, I disagree that one should miss out on playing just because they can't afford a proper drum... :)

Re: one man drum circle.
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 7:06 AMwow thanks guys, :)
latly i've been making due and building confidence by using coffee cup lids on stone tables and just taping them with my fingers, it makes a prety cool sound actualy, and you can creat a nice variation in the sound :
a: holding the lid with the oposite finger to deaden the sound,
b:holding the edge of the lid on one side with your thums so the lid tilts up a milimeter and you get a lil claping noise each time you tap it,
c: and alternating between striking with iether the meet of the finger or the finger nail.
in hte long run i mite end up buying a bucket and just cuting off the riges on the botum with a box cuter, pliyers and sandpaper.
or somthing along those lines.
thanks guys, especialy cpr
but not much volume, a -
